Wow, what a game
So the co-ed softball team I play on, D’Lucks, are now 10-1. It was almost 9-2 last night though.I’m not quite sure what was going on for the first five innings, but the team that’s normally out on that field, was absent, in spirit anyway. With the team we were playing, it should have been a pretty easy win for us.
At the top of the 5th inning, we were down 8 to 4 I believe. We were home team, so we got to bat in the bottom of the 5th. We ended up tying the score up while we were batting.
Going into the 6th inning, they decided to change the pitcher and catcher. There was a female, Mary, pitching for the first five innings of the game so, in co-ed that means a male has to be catching. The male pitcher, Dave, and myself, one of our female catchers, was EH (extra hitter) for the night incase they wanted to switch out pitchers. When the switch was made, the umpires seemed to have some sort of issue with it. They though we were already playing in the game, but we were only the extra hitters for that game. We were able to get that settled though.
I’m not sure what happened to everyone when we went into the 6th inning, but our usually team finally decided to show up. The opposing team was able to get two runs in I believe, which put them up by two. We got back up to bat and tied it up again.
Top of the seventh, the opposing team was able to get one more run in and they had one out on them. A batter from their team gets up, I’m not exactly sure where he hit the ball to, but he was thrown out at first. The guy on third base decided to run home. Everyone on the field was screaming, “Throw it to home! Throw it to home!” The first baseman, Phil, threw the ball to me at home; I made the catch and was able to tag the guy out for the double play and got the third out! The runner was obviously in disagreement with the umps call. Apparently, once I made the tag and he was called out I shot that guy a look that could kill, I then just took the ball out of my glove, looked at it and threw it on the ground. All my teammates started freaking out because of the play. As I was walking to the dugout I see Christy charging at me from third base. I thought she was going to tackle me!
Once we got the opposing team out, the ump behind the plate yelled, “Game!” There was a bit of confusion on the field for a few minutes because you can’t just stop a game in the middle of an inning, you have to finish the inning. The other team started yelling, “We won! We won!” Well, as Christy put it, “Oh no you haven’t, we’ve gotta finish the inning!” I’m sure she put a curse word or two in there though. Once we got it sorted out, we played the bottom of the seventh and tied it up once again. This meant we had to go into an extra inning.
We went into the 8th inning, the opposing team went up once again and we were down by two at that point. We got the outs, and then it was our turn to bat again. I’m pretty sure we had one or two runs walked in. Then there was a great his by one of our guys that ran in two more runs, winning the game for us!
