Winter Outlook

I generally do not put much faith in long range (seasonal) weather forecasting. There is some skill involved... recognizing global weather patterns and teleconnections, but I have never been impressed with the accuracy involved. I put the seasonal forecasts in the same category as the hurricane season forecasts that come out each spring... interesting to look at, but do not put much stock into them.

Since I am a sceptic, and have never put much time into seasonal forecasts, I will leave this to the experts. The two graphics are the winter forecasts from NOAA. The top one is the temperature forecast, which forecasts a warmer than normal winter in the Carolinas. The bottom one is the precipitation forecast, which is forecasting a drier than normal winter in the Carolinas. Both of these are a continuation of the warm, dry weather we have been having for the past 10 months. With a strengthening La Nina in the Pacific Ocean, you normally expect warm, dry weather in the Southeast.

Keep in mind, that this forecast is for the winter as an average. This does not mean that it will not get cold, and we will not have any rain.... it just means that when March arrives and we go back and average all the days together, it will be warmer and drier than normal.
