Will you be laboring on Labor Day?
Insert sad face here. :-( Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. I'm sad because there's a part of me that believes summer should never end. But that's another story altogether.Officially, summer will end midnight Sept. 21. So I know I have a few more days to enjoy this particular season. But Monday, the first one in September, will be a day off from work for some people. I will be among the lucky.
Monday will be the end of a long weekend and I will be taking a break from my usual labors. Others, though, will have just another day at the grindstone. I want them to know Congress tried to set aside a day to honor them, so this time, it's not Congress' fault.
Our holiday from laboring first was celebrated in New York City in September 1882. Gradually, if you have workers in one city in one state not working on a Monday, other workers working on a Monday in September are going to hear about it and want that day off as holiday, too. Think about it, first one state started furloughing workers to save money, and then others started doing it. See, taking time off catches on.
I was thinking, if Monday is a holiday, from laboring, why will so many people still be laboring on Labor Day?
I think Americans do not know how to shut it off; how to actually rest; how to not shop; not eat out; not do something or anything that requires someone else to work. We can't do it. We can't take off. We are always on. We have to have what we want when we want and we want other people to bring it to us!
I suggest Congress look into selecting oh, say maybe the first Friday of September, as a day to close all businesses for another holiday. This holiday we would call "Non-Labor Day." And on this day, anyone who worked on the first Monday in September gets to not labor and have a day off.
In some places, Labor Day will be celebrated with parades and picnics and in others with last-minute trips to the beach or grandma's. How will you celebrate Monday's Labor Day?
To labor or not to labor, that is the question ... I labor, therefore, I am. Or is that I am, therefore I labor? I have holiday, therefore I travel! I'll be with family and friends and while not real work, it is often a labor of love...

As many Labor Day’s in the past..
I will be spending the day laying on the couch..sobering back up..drooling on the Sunday edition of the Morning News..while watching one of those church shows previously taped by my better half..
This to prepare me for the ass-chewing I’ll be getting when my wife wakes up to find that once again I have spent yet another weekend of not emptying the trash..not cutting the grass..and not washing her vehicle..
At some point she will venture into the spare room that she wanted painted..only to find that I lost my inspiration some weeks ago..the paint brush is still stuck to the dried paint in the almost full can..
I’ll spend the next several hours trying to explain how the large quanity of empty beer cans spread about the room.. are what powers my adverse artistic abilities..
I have contacted many businesses that I dont even work for..and offered to work Monday for free..so far all have declined me this chance to salvage any chances I will have of enjoying this day..
I suppose my chances of getting hit by a bus before then are about as good as my chances of going on a date with Nicole Boone and her paying..
Anyway..I just wanted to say Happy Labor Day
