Wild Gators are region champs—barely
After fumbling on the first two drives, Lake View coach Jewell McLaurin must have been thinking, Isn't this the reason why we didn't play on Friday? The Wild Gators didn't look much like region champs in the first half, fumbling three times and falling behind Hemingway 12-0.
But like they've done so many times before, they found a way to win.
Lake View's running attack was not stopped all night, except by Lake View itself. The Wild Gators had 11 penalties for almost 90 yards and four turnovers. Hemingway's bend-but-don't break defense was able to hold until the fourth quarter, but once the Gators finally held on to the ball, they were able to score two successive touchdowns.
Despite being held at bay all night, the Tigers came back with a chance to win, but the Lake View defense stepped up again. Anyone who's seen the Gators in action knows about the tremendous team speed, and it was evident as Lake View sacked Hemingway quarterback Denzel Wedgeworth three times and bothered him all night.
Much as they did in the Carvers Bay game, Lake View made plays when they needed to and when the game was on the line. That's the mark of a true champion.
