What’s the Weather? Monday, 6/21/2010
As a meteorologist, you can probably imagine that I've gotten some pretty interesting questions about the oil spill and the effects it could have on the weather and the effects the weather could have on it. One question I've gotten more than once is "Could the oil spill make it rain oil?" So...True or False: The oil spill in the Gulf could cause it to rain oil.
Answer: False. Rain is caused by the water cycle which starts with evaporation of water which leads to clouds which then leads to rain. Other substances have been known to find their way into our precipitation such as sulfuric acid from air pollution, but only from chemical processes--not from evaporating into the air.
