What Lincoln is Thinkin’ - Week 9 Random Musings
What Lincoln is Thinkin' - Random Musings- Lake City has put together two of the most impressive butt-whoopin's of the year - I'm not sure which one was more impressive, Friday's 51-9 throttling of North Myrtle Beach, or their 54-14 annihilation of Manning.
- It was arguable last year that the best running back and quarterback in the Eastern Carolinas were freshman, but this year there is no question that the best running back and quarterback in the Eastern Carolinas are sophomores - Lake City's Shon Carson, and Myrtle Beach's Everett Golson are just THAT good.
- I hate to thrown anyone under the bus, but the field conditions at St. James High School are shameful.
- The biggest upset in my two years of covering high school football in South Carolina occurred last week with Lakewood beating Marlboro County. The Bulldogs are falling apart at the wrong time - they must blow out Wilson on Friday to start feeling good about themselves again.
- There are some great rivalries in the Eastern Carolinas, but when it comes to "intensity" I'm not sure there's one that's more charged then Mullins/Marion. With the addition of a trophy given to the victor this year, I'm not sure it needed to be taken to another level.
- Georgetown knocked it out of the park by hiring Tyronne Davis as their new head coach. The Bulldogs play the right way, and secured a spot in the playoffs with an impressive 21-10 win over Socastee. A few weeks ago, my coach of the year was Jeff Bley... but now it might be Davis.
- There's so many great public schools out there that we try to cover every Friday night, sometimes it's hard to follow exactly what's going on with the SCISA schools. But two quarterbacks that have been phenomenal - Lee Schurlknight at The Byrnes School and Stephen Johnson at Dillon Christian - deserve recognition. Schurlknight had chucked for 1900 yards through 8 games, and Johnson's TD to INT ratio is 20-2. Unreal.
- Slowly but surely, Marion is making a comeback. They're still way behind Dillon and Cheraw, but they're getting there.
- There are not many sexy matchups this week, but I had to choose one game to go watch, I'd go to Waccamaw at Kingstree. There are so few games during a season that mean so much - but for these two teams, win and they're in the playoffs, lose and they're out. It's as simple as that.
- As much as I hate to say this, we might be hard-pressed to bring home a state title to the Eastern Carolinas - in AAAA, Byrnes, Dorman, Beaufort and South Pointe are beasts, in AAA, Daniel and Crestwood are strong, in AA, Strom, Abbeville and Timberland look unbeatable, and in A, Williston-Elko, Blackville-Hilda and Calhoun County are the favorites. All those teams have combined to lose just one game. Our best chances? Central, Myrtle Beach and Chesterfield. If I was one of the other coaches, I'd find a way to conjure up some magic, but they are going to need more than just luck.
What are you thinkin' about Week 9?

Cheraw will kill Marion this week.
I think Byrnes and Dorman play this week. That might be the game of the year.
I’d throw Lake View in the mix for the A state title. You can’t ever count them boys out. I still like my Rams. I think we’ll run Calhoun and/or Blackville Hilda to death.
