What Lincoln is Thinkin’ - Week 6

Welcome to our new interactive What Lincoln is Thinkin'. Read through my rants and then tell me what you're thinkin' about high school football in the Eastern Carolinas.

Halfway through the 2007 Regular Season and some teams have performed very well, others have struggled. Here are some of my midseason awards:

Biggest Surprise: West Florence I know, the Knights lost to rival Wilson last week (an upset that I predicted in last week's WLIT) but their defense has fantastic. The Knights went with Pizzuti at QB instead of the healed Jimmy Howell. Trey Woodberry has a week off to figure out exactly which way is the best way to go at quarterback.

Biggest Disappointment: North Myrtle Beach The Chiefs were supposed to have one of the strongest lines in the area, and contend once again with rival Myrtle Beach for the region title. MB Coach Scott Earley was very scared of the Chiefs before the season started. At 2-3 NMB has struggled mightily to score points. They've lost their three games close, but I don't think they have a shot of topping the Seahawks this week. Not a chance.

Best Upset of the Mid-Year: Carolina Forest Over Carvers Bay The Panthers put themselves on the map with a win over the reigning A Division I champions. We found out that the Panthers might not be good enough to contend for a state title after getting blown out by Conway. But they still put it all together that night to earn a big win.

Mid-Year MVP: Hartsville QB Will Newsome Through the first five games, Newsome was 45-85 for 813 yards, 16 TD's and Zero INT's. He has the Red Foxes thinking they can win a Championship, and they definitely have the offense to do it.

Coach of the Mid-Year: Darryl Page, Wilson The Tigers looked lifeless in their Week Zero defeat to Clover at home. Since then, they've looked unstoppable, and pulled off a great win over West Florence.

Teams With State Title Chances:
Best Bets
Myrtle Beach Right now, they are the best team in AAA. No one has come close to stopping that prolific offense.
Dillon The Wildcats have only lost to Myrtle Beach, but they gave the Seahawks one whale of a game. If they can do that to the best that AAA has to offer, they're definitely the AA favorite.
Have Hope, But Need Luck
Hartsville One thing the Red Wolves have in their favor, is they've played the best of the best. They've played Byrnes, and lost, but at least they know what they're up against.
Conway Not the best team Coach Jordan has had, but they get better and better every week. It's good to have a veteran QB like Dakota Derrick.
Cheraw Losing two early games isn't good, but they've picked up two HUGE wins over Marion and Lamar.
Marlboro County They need improved quarterback play and offensive execution to win it all.
Carvers Bay, Lake View, Chesterfield, Lamar These four teams might be the best A teams in the state. I just can't tell which ones are better than the others. This week's epic between CB and LV might go a long way.
West Florence Get the quarterback and offensive situation straight. They have much bigger battles than Wilson ahead of them.
Wilson Every week they get better. So where will they be in seven weeks?
Not Giving Up Yet
Lake City Great Defense. Find out a way to score points, and the Panthers could make a run.
Hemingway Tigers fought their heart out against Carvers Bay last week. That was a win they really could've used. QB Denzel Wedgeworth definitely in the running with Newsome, CBay's Jonathan Holmes and Myrtle's Everett Golson for Mid-Year MVP.
McBee Still undefeated, but not getting much love around the state. I'd like to see them play a really talented team to gauge how good they are.
Central A loss to Chesterfield hurts.
Carolina Forest, Socastee Two teams that have really played well this year, and both coaches deserve a lot of credit. But just not AAA title contenders yet.

Disagree? You tell me who should, or shouldn't, be on this list.
