What Lincoln is Thinkin' - Unsung Heroes

Matt Smith Safety, Waccamaw While the other Matt Smith (at Myrtle Beach) may have some big time college calling his name, the Warriors version seems to be everywhere all the time, even if he is only 5'8" 160.

Kendrick Page Quarterback, Latta The Vikings have Page to thank for the turnaround this season - he's a big, athletic, quick quarterback that can break a big play anytime, passing or rushing.

Antonio Mitchum Running Back, Hemingway They call him "The Bus" and if you've seen him run, you'd know why. The Tigers lost their top two offensive stars in Denzell Wedgeworth and Tashaun Frederick to injuries, but Mitchell has excelled in their absence.

Kentrell Dewitt Quarterback, Green Sea-Floyds 7 touchdowns against Johnsonville. 'Nuff said. And I don't care that "Nuff" is not grammatically correct.

Malik Bey Running Back, Georgetown Georgetown has also had a great bounce back year, and much of it has to do with what Bey has done in the backfield. He and the other backs have allowed the Bulldogs to run that grind it out offense that Tyronne Davis has implemented. He's also made four interceptions on the defensive side.

Nick Asbury Running Back, Aynor In Aynor's 56-7 loss to Dillon, Asbury scored on a 67 yard touchdown run and, at times, looked like the best player on the field. I'm sorry Jody Jenerette, but if I was Asbury, I would go play at Conway for my senior year.

Alex Holloman Cornerback, Myrtle Beach Damazio Skelton had a coming out party last year in the Seahawk secondary, and it's Holloman who is doing it this year. He had a ridiculous pick-six against Conway, and intercepted a pitch last week against Socastee.

Brian Gillard Running Back, Marion Gillard finally has the Swamp Foxes winning again, and, along with Lake City's Shon Carson, may be the best underclassmen running backs in the Eastern Carolinas.

Ethan Clark Quarterback, Lumberton The junior has led the Pirates to a great start to this season, including their first win over Purnell Swett since 2002. Clark had 340 yards of offense in that game, and three scores.

Ryne Hardwick Quarterback, Conway Playing quarterback at Conway is not an easy job - but Hardwick seems to handle it very well. I thought originally that the Tigers might struggle this year, but Jason Livingston and Seth Moreland have proved to be great weapons. And Hardwick has done a quiet good job using them.

Lee Schurlknight Jr. Quarterback, The Byrnes School Schurlknight has thrown for almost 2,000 yards in just 7 games, and he's made almost 90 tackles. The man is a beast, and if Byrnes was an SCHSL school instead of a SCISA school, we'd be talking about this kid more than Everett Golson.

Do you know of any unsung heroes?

No love for offensive linemen and only two defensive players, both DB. Thought this was a column about unsung heroes. It is always about the skill posistions.

Eddie,

Point well-taken.

Today, I was talking with Mullins coach Ron Lanham and Marion coach Bryan Carfley.  They had a 10 minute conversation about the guys in the trenches, and I remarked how coaches always talk about the guys on the line and tv guys love to talk about the guys making the plays.

So here’s your chance, coaches and fans… give your line players some dap.
