What Lincoln is Thinkin’ - Champs!
There's absolutely no greater feeling than watching a team that you've covered all year win a state championship.Okay, maybe actually win a state championship might be a better feeling.
But I wouldn't know how that feels. But I can guess at what it must feel like from seeing Jaron Brown's huge smile, and Johnny White's Gatorade-soaked hair, and the hugs on the Wilson sideline, and Daryl Page throwing his hands to the heavens.
Two games that were absolutely unbelievable... for totally different reasons. First off, you never see a domination in state championship game like what Cheraw did to Chapman. The Braves opened the game by taking the opening kick almost to midfield. Two plays later, they were in the end zone. It then took Chapman an 18 play drive to cash in on the other side. With the ball back, the Braves then scored again, this time on three plays. After that, the defense stepped up, and the offense kept going. The whole game, it seemed as if Chapman was just incredibly slow. Plus for a team that was supposed to have size, they didn't look big whatsoever. One thing we knew going in to the AA playoffs, no one could match Cheraw's experience. It showed Saturday.
Meanwhile, Wilson had no idea what the experience of a state championship game would be like. 54 years in between titles can do that. But, again, these Tigers showed they weren't going to let anything faze them. I mean, if games at Timberland, Strom Thurmond, and Crestwood wouldn't... I guess a little game at Williams-Brice Stadium wouldn't either. With three touchdowns in the first quarter it looked like it would be another shootout. But Wilson let their 14 points stand, and came up with some huge defensive stands, to beat a very talented Chester squad. This team has impressed me, heck, they've impressed everybody, all season, every step of the way. Coach Page deserves it, but so does each one of those players.
Great ends to great seasons, for two great teams.
What are you thinkin' about the championship games?

I would like to comment on the Pee Dee area football teams. You always hear about the teams from Spartanburg, Columbia, etc, etc. But for the last few years it’s been all Pee Dee teams. Last year all the boarder schools, Dillon, Marlboro, Cheraw, Pageland & Chesterfield, they were in the running this year from Myrtle Beach to Pageland, Wilson, Manning, Lamar, Hartsville the list keeps going. The caliber of players in the Pee Dee are never ending. At Columbia there were Chesterfield fans pulling for Cheraw, Cheraw fans pulling for Wilson, it was good Pee Dee football fans, they’re the best. There are no easy football schedules for Pee Dee teams, if your school is playing a Pee Dee team, you will be facing a contender, so please bring your best game. Congratulations, Chesterfield, Cheraw & Wilson.
