What Lincoln is Thinkin' - Southern 500 Winners & Losers
WINNERS
Joey Logano - Obviously Cale Yarborough taught the kid something. "Sliced Bread" had his best overall race, missing the wall when other top drivers found themselves in the pits with right side damage. Logano even led for 19 laps. I was impressed.
Stewart-Haas Racing - Two top five finishes, the new team is showing it can hang with the big boys. Now, it has two drivers in the top 8 in points, RCR can't say that, Penske can't say that, and Roush doesn't even have one.
Hendrick Motorsports - Three drivers in the top five, including Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson coming from way back to have good finishes. Plus, they manufacture Stewart-Haas's engines. Now if only they could do something about that 88.
Mark Martin - Backs up the decision to come back and race full time by winning at Darlington. If he did not have three DNF's he'd be even higher in the points.
Michael Waltrip - If I was him, I'd be ecstatic to have survived that wreck. Scary.
LOSERS
Jeremy Mayfield His career was on life support as it is, now it's got to be over. We may not hear from him for a long time, but here's hoping he gets help for what he's on, whatever it is.
Kyle Busch Came in the heavy favorite in both races this weekend. Bad luck cost him Saturday's race, bad driving cost him Sunday's.
Martin Truex and Kasey Kahne Two guys who really needed victories to turn around their 2009 seasons dominated portions of the race. But when it came down to the final few laps, they were not heard from.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Visibly frustrated all weekend, Junior dropped an 'S' bomb in front of all the cameras on Friday, then Saturday he dropped a stink bomb in the Southern 500. There's something wrong with that car and that team, and something has to change soon.
Roush Racing Matt Kenseth had the pole, and then wasn't heard from after the first 15 laps. Greg Biffle once again had the best car of the night, and couldn't hang on to it. Carl Edwards' "Up" car was a serious downer. Jamie McMurray's car was toast by 10:30pm. This has been a down season for the Cat in the Hat's crew.
Who do you think were the big winners and losers of the weekend?
