West rolls, South shows promise
The West Florence Knights were expected to run through their cross-town rivals Friday. And they did - eventually.
Anyone who knew anything about the Knights could already tell the defense was going to be a dominant force. South Florence rushed for just under 90 yards, most of that coming late in the game after West had already built up a sizable lead.
But there is a little chink in West's armor. The young and inexperienced secondary allowed nearly 200 passing yards to South. Not taking anything away from the Bruins, but a team with state title aspirations can't afford to give up passing yards so easily, especially in Class 4A.
The Knight's offense did little to impress early on either. Quarterback Paul Pizzuti completed only a handful of passes as West's air attack never got off the ground. But the Knights are big up front, and eventually wore down the Bruins' defense as a couple of West players broke through for some big runs.
Now to South. Wasn't sure what to expect with a new coach and an offense pieced together from three or four different playbooks, but the Bruins showed promise. They weren't able to run the ball at first, but did take advantage of West's young secondary in the passing game. Without a lot of penalties and mistakes, South might have kept themselves in the game a little longer.
The defense played well enough also. As I said, apart from wearing down and allowing a few big runs, they held their own.
Interesting to see where they both go from here.
