Welcome Cold Weather!

So if Wednesday was any indication, winter-like weather is officially on its way. If you live in the South for any length of time, you run into many people who have extremely different views on the weather. A lot of Northerners come down here because of the weather...and I would venture to guess that a lot of Southerners stay down here for the very same reason. You pretty much only have to wear a winter jacket for a couple of months out of the year. I have to say though...that after working for several years straight in the 100+ degree summer days, I enjoy being able to wear the winter jacket.

I grew up for a large portion of my childhood living near Chicago, and winters there meant snow that was measured in feet, you didn't get a day off of school unless you literally couldn't walk through the mess, and pretty much every Christmas was guaranteed to be a white one. My family moved down to South Carolina when I was a teenager, and at first I was extremely confused and rather annoyed by the weather. As the years went on though, I began to look forward to the times in late spring when you'd get that first taste of a South Carolina summer - when it's still light out past eight at night, and there's a cool breeze floating through the 70 degree air. When I got over how great spring and fall can be, I really developed an appreciation for South Carolina winters. Instead of worrying about huge amounts of snow and getting to work and school...everyone looks forward to the slightest possibility of a snowflake. Well probably everyone that is, besides the transportation department.

I really look forward to the days when I get to wear my winter jacket...and even maybe, just maybe... the gloves. I know it sounds crazy to enjoy cold weather but I guess it reminds me a little bit of childhood. There's something wonderful and clean about a brisk winter wind and something comforting about the days ending before the clock hits six. I guess it's a little reminder that the holidays are on their way...and for me, there's no better time of year. Whatever your feelings on the weather, you have to admit we have it pretty good in South Carolina. I've never been to a place where the sun shines more per year, and for many months out of that year, you can actually get away with wearing flip-flops.

I plan to enjoy this cool weather while it lasts... After about 13 years in South Carolina I know that it'll be gone before we know it.
