Was Petty lip-synchin’ on “Free Fallin‘“?
I'll be honest — the only part of Super Bowl XLII I watched was the halftime show, and I thought Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers sounded great. I'm disheartened today to learn that some people, however, think they did a little TOO well.A writer at the other Morning News — the one in Dallas — thinks Tom Petty appeared to be lip-synching. His vocals just sounded too good, apparently. Other evidence: Petty's lungs didn't puff up enough, but his microphone, on the other hand, was too puffy and obscured his mouth.
Your eye is far keener than mine if you can observe someone's lungs beneath a blazer and that scarf-like thing Petty wore at the Super Bowl. And that big, puffy thing on the microphone happens to be a windscreen, which cuts out the annoying popping sounds that would otherwise occur anytime you say or sing a word beginning with a "p" sound.
Maybe everyone's just jealous of his sweet beard.
This whole thing made me rewind about 17 years (I can't believe it's been that long) to Nirvana's appearance on the UK show "Top of the Pops." Kurt Cobain wasn't lip-synching, but singing over the instrumental tracks of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" while everyone was forced to pretend to be playing their instruments.
