Under the Sun: It’s been nearly 20 years since Hurricane Hugo
Hurricane season started June 1. If I’ve got the date right, September will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo.I was in seventh grade at the time and a hurricane was an exciting prospect.
As an adult, I feel the exact opposite about the storms. I hope they stay far, far away.
But, at the time, I so wanted to see what a hurricane was like. I can remember watching the Weather Channel, waiting to see what category the hurricane was and what path it might take.
Our electricity went out about 8 or 9 p.m., and we’d moved to the living room and kitchen areas to sleep. There were trees on the side of the house where the bedrooms were located.
I can remember dragging my pillow, blankets, stuffed animal and radio into the kitchen.
I listened to my mix tapes on my little boombox and anticipated what being in the eye of hurricane would be like.
Unfortunately, I fell asleep not long after we lost power and I missed Hugo, well everything but a little bit of rain and wind.
When I woke up about 7 the next morning, I remember how blue the sky was — and how much debris was left behind.
I was so disappointed. And my parents couldn’t believe I’d slept through all that racket.
We were without power for several days. My parents did all the cooking on our grill. It was fun at the time, but I wouldn’t want to go through that again.
Luckily, no one in our neighborhood was hurt and no one’s house was damaged.
Do you remember where you were when Hugo hit?
