Under the Sun: Facebook

OK, I haven’t tried out Twitter, yet, but I made my first foray into the world of Internet social networking this week.

I joined Facebook at the urging of a couple of friends.

I couldn’t believe how many people I recognized just from high school.

I even located an old college friend I’d lost touch with years ago, as well as one of my favorite high school English teachers.

I haven’t explored much of the services Facebook has to offer, but it seems to have something for everyone.

There are even groups you can join, depending on your interests.

It looks like they have everything from scuba diving groups to high school alumni groups planning class reunions.

I discovered several of my classmates from Johnsonville are trying to track people down for a 15-year class reunion in 2010.

Have you checked out Facebook yet?

I have found it to be a great resource!

I’m really impressed with how quickly I was able to get in touch with people I haven’t talked with in years.

I have become totally addicted. I have also found high school and college friends. One of the best parts is being able to see pictures of them and their families. This is a great place to go to on the internet.

The photos are neat to look at - I need to start taking some so I can add them to my page. I also think being able to send friends pieces of flair is really fun smile

I’m a Facebook holdout. : ) I just don’t want to make the effort to make a page, then keep up with the page when I have a perfectly good Myspace page out there that serves the same purpose. I mainly use my page to share family pics with out of state friends and family. Anyone else out there still holding out?

I quit Myspace after I kept getting viruses. Facebook is a lot cleaner, and you really don’t have to keep it updated. It’s mostly for communicating and seeing what other people are doing.

BTW, since most of yall are newspaper people, when I get an email saying someone commented to my post, there is no link to go to. Does it matter that I use firefox, or is it just my computer? grin

I don’t get a link, either. I almost always forget, though, and click on the link that is there - the one that says “To stop receiving notifications for this comment, click here.“ Sigh. Then I go to the Web site to read the new comment.

Oh, and I meant to respond to Jamie D.‘s comment, too. It only took a couple of minutes to sign up for Facebook. It couldn’t have been any easier. And you don’t have to put any photos up. The site looks at the info you input, such as what high school or college you went to, then it suggests people you might know. Then, if you want to, you can request that they add you as a friend. Then you can see their photos and information and they can see your profile. It’s really neat. I recommend trying it out if you’ve got about five or 10 minutes.

Thanks for letting me know about the link missing. Now I know I’m not crazy.

I might look into it. I don’t think my sisters have Facebook accounts, though. So that might be the deciding factor. I mainly use it with them, a friend in Va., one in W.V. and my niece in N.Y. I know the friend in Va. has a Facebook page, but I don’t think anyone else does.

No problem! Now, if I could only stop clicking on the link to stop notifications smile

And Jamie D., you should try it. That way, you’ll know if you’re interested in it or not. I showed the site to my husband and he decided pretty quickly that it wasn’t for him.

Be the leader, Jamie D…change them. LOL

Jamie K, I know what you mean. I hit that link too. I actually thought that was why I wasn’t getting the “real” link.
