Under the Sun: By Request

In my last blog, Mr. Mookie asked me to see what Nana’s perspective was on the Sept. 11 attacks.

She’s been in and out of the hospital lately, so it’s taken me a little while to get around to asking her if she remembered what she was doing and what she thought about it.

The first time I asked her about it, she said she didn’t remember what she was doing when the attacks happened. She thought they occurred just a year or two ago, until I told her they happened in 2001. The second time I asked her about them, she said she was horrified by them.

I think she could tell you more vividly about what it was like during World War II. Or about what life was like when her children were growing up.

I can’t imagine keeping up with 92 years of memories. (I’m listening to some of her favorite artists while I type this, by the way — the Andrew Sisters and Glenn Miller. )

Nana had open heart surgery yesterday and seems to be doing well, so far. The doctors said she has the heart of a 40-year-old and the body of a 65- or 70-year-old.

So please keep her in your thoughts for me!
