Thoughts on Week 8
A few thoughts on the high school football action in Week 8:1. Marlboro County losing to Lakewood? That's got to be one of the biggest shockers I've seen in my three years here. Granted, the Gators are not as bad as they were a few years ago, but still, Marlboro is always one of those teams you feel could make a deep playoff run just about any year. With Lake City banned from the postseason, there probably won't be any Class 3A left by this time next month.
2. Conway - Hartsville is always a battle. Friday was no different. The Red Foxes' offense came alive in the second half, but it was just a little too late. Conway's rushing game probably wore then down. As Calabrese said Wednesday, the Foxes are a little more used to playing against a spread offense.
3. Lake City just continues to roll. After beating Myrtle Beach and coming so close against Crestwood, it's safe to say that the Panthers would have been a force this season in Class 3A. Makes the consequences of their opening-night brawl stand out even more.
4. Nice to see Cheraw has rebounded from a rough 1-3 start. The Braves lost to Marlboro County, Chesterfield and Central, so I didn't hold that too much against them. After basically whipping every opponent since, they're a good candidate to get back into the Elite 8.
