The King of Pop is pretty popular

Walking back into work from lunch break I paused midway through the hall and took a detour to peep at the memorial service for Michael Jackson being broadcasted on WBTW, as it is on about dozen more networks.

First thing that came to mind was the iconic label “The King of Pop.” Jackson’s legacy will long be celebrated, but not since his glory days in the 1980’s has his popularity been more evident.

A global icon, Jackson may indeed be the most popular music artist and celebrity that ever lived. The memorial services reminds a bit of the passing of South Carolina native James Brown and my editor said the homegoing service of Elvis drew extensive coverage as well, captivating a nation of mourners.

Spare the details of his influence and how I became a fan like millions of other music lovers, I’m left wondering if any individual could can come anywhere close to Jackson’s level of success. Who can? Who will reign on the pop charts? Who can wear the crown?

With so many accomplishments, awards and honors, I tell you that really amazes me in this day of digital downloads and artist inability to make a solid cohesive full-length project. Jackson has sold three quarters of a billion copies of his recordings. Thriller shipped over 28 million copies and will most likely be a “multi-diamond” album if there is such a thing… I’m talking Shania Twain “Come On Over” numbers.

“MJ” is to the music world what John Travolta was in that not so good movie…a Phenomenon.
