The History Behind April 15

April 15 is a rather significant day in U.S. history.

Abraham Lincoln died on this day in 1865, after he was shot the previous evening.

The "Titanic" sank on this day in 1912, after she hit an iceberg the previous evening.

Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier on this day in 1947, one of the major civil rights events in U.S. history.

April 15 is also Tax Day. I asked a question to myself. I said, "Myself, why April 15?"

Here's what I found. It all started after the passage of the 16th amendment, which allowed for a personal income tax. Before that "important" amendment was passed, the United States did not directly tax personal income. However, our government found that previous forms of raising revenue were not sufficient to ensure national solvency. After the amendment was ratified, Congress decided to start the ball rolling in 1914 and chose March 1 as the deadline. One article I found reported that the government wanted to get its money from the wealthiest Americans before they left on their summer holidays. In 1918, the deadline was moved back to March 15. Then, in 1955, it was moved back again, this time to the present date of April 15. The main reason I found was the nice people in Washington wanted to give the IRS extra time to handle the work and to give hard-working citizens more time to prepare their returns. Of course, if you wait until the last minute, it also gives the government more time to hold on to your money before sending a refund.

All this just adds to April 15's significance in history... and in our lives.
