Sun expected to come out of hiding soon

You have probably noticed by now that the sun has not been out in a very long time here in Eastern Carolina. In fact, we haven't even seen a glimpse, not even a small glimpse, of the sun since last Thursday. However, we do have some much brighter weather in our future for the middle part of this week. As a result, look for some very nice early spring weather with highs in the 70s inland and 60s at the beach by Wednesday and Thursday.

And while you won't hear any complaints out of me about the sunny and warmer weather headed our way, I must say that we really, really needed the rain--bad. In fact, before the rains Monday and early Tuesday morning, rainfall deficits across the area were running anywhere from 4 to even 6 inches below normal. And it's only March. Normally, the winter season is the wettest season in the Carolinas, so a dry winter can put us in a really bad situation when the summer heat arrives. Fortunately, we racked up some pretty good rain totals yesterday. Here they are:

Florence- 0.46"
North Myrtle Beach- 0.74"
Lumberton- 0.08"

While North Carolina did get cheated a bit in this recent rain, every little bit helps. Here are the latest deficits around the area:

Florence- -3.61"
North Myrtle Beach- -3.86"
Lumberton- -6.43"

As much as the recent rain helped, we could use more but there really isn't very much in the forecast for the upcoming week. A cold front could bring a little bit of rain late Thursday as it moves through the area but moisture will be fairly limited with that system. Beyond Thursday, the weather is expected to be dry through the upcoming weekend.

While that is good news if you have outdoor plans this weekend, it looks like it will be a chilly weekend with highs only in the 50s on Saturday and low to mid 60s on Sunday. Overnight low temperatures this weekend will be in the 30s both Friday and Saturday night, so get ready to bundle up if you will be outside this weekend!
