Still watching the tropics this Labor Day

As of 11:00 AM, Gustav is currently making landfall along the Louisiana coast. Maximum winds are currently 110 mph, making Gustav a category two storm at this time. Landfall is officially at Cocodrie, approximately 70 miles SE of New Orleans. Storm surge with the land-falling storm is 10-14 feet. Current track movement is still NW at 15 mph, but forward speed will decrease now that the storm is interacting with land. There will be problems with flooding due to slow movement of this storm by the end of the week. Some locations could see as much as 20 inches of rain.

As of 11:00 AM, Tropical Storm Hanna is remaining steady at 50 mph. A hurricane hunters flight is headed to check out the storm. It’s possible that Hanna is slightly stronger as the storm looks more organized than it did this time yesterday. Hanna is still encountering some winds due to Gustav, so is not expected to strengthen significantly in the short-term. The storm is currently under weak steering flow and movement is 4 mph toward the WSW. After 2-3 days, the storm is expected to turn more northward and pick up some forward speed. The official forecast track remains similar and we’ll continue to keep a close eye on Hanna for impacts along the East Coast and possibly the Carolinas by the end of the week.

As of 11:00 AM, Tropical Depression 9 has formed. The center of the storm is approximately 1500 miles away from the Leeward Islands, so it’s pretty far out there. Winds are estimated at 35 mph and the storm is moving W at 16 mph. It is possible that TD 9 will become Tropical Storm Ike later today. It could be a hurricane by Thursday, according to the official track and forecasts place the storm north of Hispanola by the weekend.
