State representative calls debate ‘critical’ for McCain
The Republican debate in Myrtle Beach marks a "critical" point in John McCain's resurging presidential campaign as "the eyes of the world will be watching tonight," said state Rep. Phillip Lowe, R-Florence.Lowe said McCain's experience as the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Armed Forces committee, as well as his military record, make him the best candidate to handle foreign policy and national security, which he said are the president's primary functions.
"The war on terror is not over after Iraq," and the United States might have to be an aggressor at times to stop terrorists, who only understand power and pounce on any weakness, Lowe said.
The state General Assembly just began its 2008 session, but Lowe said he was able to travel to Myrtle Beach because the legislators were let out early today.
Lowe attended last year's GOP debate in Columbia, but said he expects this to be "the most important debate yet." The state's upcoming primary is known for selecting the eventual Republican presidential nominee, he said.
