Snow Business Like The News Business
I thought Tuesday would be a busy day at work. And how!
With the first measurable snow in years to fall across the Pee Dee, the Sand Hills, and across much of our viewing area, News13 and scnow.com was there to bring it all to you as best we could.
We ran into some technical difficulties, but we persevered.
I think the best part of our coverage is that we didn't hype it up too much.
It should be top-of-the-show news when it snows--anytime it snows, really--in our part of the world. It just doesn't happen very much.
But it shouldn't be hyped, and it wasn't.
Patricia Burkett and Melissa Hoeman both did outstanding work live in the field, where it was actually snowing in our viewing area. It was great to see the huge flakes falling in Bennettsville, and blowing all over the place in Florence County.
We kept up with all of the closings and delays as best we could, considering our technical difficulties across many areas early Tuesday morning.
It wasn't easy, but now that Lyra and I both have laptops on the anchor desk, we are able to keep up with breaking news and information even better, even if it isn't already in our scripts.
We also were able to include a healthy dose of Inauguration news.
The fact that Barack Obama, an African-American, is now this country's president, is one of the biggest news stories of my generation, and of all generations alive today.
I am glad we were able to balance two huge stories--one of local significance, and one of complete and broad international importance--all in one day.
And the best news is--we get to do it all again tomorrow!
