Six more weeks of winter?

I know I just posted a blog about missing the snow a couple days ago, and maybe the groundhog was listening! Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this morning at sunrise in Pennsylvania, indicating that 6 more weeks of winter are expected before spring begins. It is amazing to me that they have been doing this tradition in Punxsutawney since the 1800s. Here are a couple interesting facts I gathered about Groundhog Day-

The Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper is credited with printing the news of the first observance in 1886.

In 2001, Phil's prediction was shown live on the JumboTron at Times Square in New York City.

Punxsutawney is located in Western Pennsylvania, about 80 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

For most of the year, Phil lives in a climate-controlled home at the Punxsutawney Library.

The groundhog is known by several names. The most common one is the woodchuck.

A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting.

A groundhog's life span is normally 6 to 8 years.

I read somewhere that Punxsutawney Phil is only right about 40% of the time. So according to the odds alone, maybe spring will begin early after all.. In fact, it's going to feel like spring in the Eastern Carolinas for the next several days. Normal high temperatures for the beginning of February are in the upper 50s. We may even see middle 70s by the time we get toward Wednesday. Not to mention that we have a couple opportuinites for some spring showers during the next week. While we should stay dry Sunday, we'll see a slight chance for sprinkles by Monday. By Wednesday, a strong cold front shoud bring us a better chance for rain and also bring daytime high temperatures back to normal for this time of the year!

Look..just let me say that alot of us have grown quite fond of Frank and dont wanna see him replaced..even if the groundhog’s record is that good..wink

For the record tho..I didnt replace Don…

The biggest decision I have made in years is what color socks to wear..and even with that the wife lends alot of support..

Missing Don is understandable..being mean to Frank isnt tho..Frank is a cool dude and does a great job..

This is nothing personal about Frank, but about treating someone like crap who’s been a big part of our community for so long.  Not yours or Frank’s fault...but I am entitled to my opinion (just like you are)...one shared by many, many viewers of TV-13.  Im sure your management reads this and they’ll spin it as if Don left on his own.  Fact is, I saw him with his wife in Dillon and he tells me an entirely different story.

Well I guess all of us should start hanging out in Dillon..so we can run into Don and he can tell us whatever story he told you..

or even worse...maybe you will tell the tale..

I adored the man..he was an icon..havent heard how he left and quite frankly I dont see where it is my business to care about it..especially here on Mel’s blog..

For the record..

..management doesnt read..they mostly look at the pretty pictures..

..is it possible that you could use our “Color The Weather” option to get your message out ?

Chris: Yes I do see it..and it looks like Don is packing his luggage in his car..he must be going on a trip somewhere..

Lyra: Is that TV 13 logos on the luggage? How come we dont have those?

Nothing personal against Frank..you say..

Don didnt decide to leave, he was forced out and you all know it.  Now you got some pretty boy that speaks to fast and aint nearly as good.  Ya’ll dont have to lie.  Don told me he was basically forced out.

Personally, I think Frank Johnson does an outstanding job, I personally like Melissa a little more, she’s gorgeous and talented, but maybe that’s just because I’m a guy.  Don was a great weather person, but I hear the business is hard on a person.  So with changing ratings and technology, the old is always replaced with the new.  And I think the whole weather team is great...especially Melissa.  I don’t know if any of you have watched the weekends lately, but between Patricia Burkett and Melissa, you’ve got a one-two punch that just can’t be stopped.  It’s like SERIOUS with Patricia and SMILES with Melissa.  Even if it’s going to rain, she let’s you know in a positive light. 

And thanks for the Groundhog information!  However, I think they should switch it to if...I don’t know...if George Bush sees his shadow, I hear vampires can’t see their own!
