Rough weather possible Thursday

Wednesday will be a windy and unusually warm day across South Carolina ahead of a very powerful storm system that will move across the area Wednesday night and Thursday.

As of the time of this posting around 7:35 a.m. Wednesday, tornado watches remain in effect for much of Alabama and western Georgia with numerous tornado warnings issued this morning across Alabama and Mississippi. The air ahead of this system in Georgia and across the Carolinas today will be very warm and very moist, so there is a good chance this system will maintain its strength as it moves eastward toward Georgia and the Carolinas. Add in the fact that winds aloft are very strong and shifting direction with height, and you have the potential for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms containing damaging winds and/or tornadoes. The main threat will likely be Thursday morning, but there is a chance we could have severe weather developing during the late overnight hours Wednesday night/early Thursday morning, so be sure to make sure your weather radio is turned on before you head off to bed tonight.

In the short term, don't look for much in the way of rain during the daylight hours Wednesday with only a few passing showers from time to time. Enjoy the very warm weather today--just be sure to remain alert for the severe weather late, late tonight and mostly Thursday morning.

Have a Happy Hump Day!
