Rocket Fuels The Fire
I don't watch "60 Minutes" on a regular basis, and shame on me, because it, along with "Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel" on HBO are, in my opinion, the highest forms of what we do as TV news reporters.I have tuned in to the show on occasion, when I know someone or something I am interested in is going to be featured; I've watched the profiles of Judge Judy Sheindlin, my all-time favorite rock group U2, and a handful of prominent athletes, including Dale Earnhardt, Junior.
Sunday night, mostly out of boredom, but somewhat out of curiosity, I tuned into the much-anticipated Roger Clemens piece, reported by the legendary Mike Wallace.
You may remember that last month, the independent report on performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball came out, and by far the biggest name named was that of Roger Clemens, who has won multiple Cy Young Awards, 354 games, and is a sure bet as a Hall of Famer, if he ever retires.
Clemens, unlike others, flatly denies he ever used or knowingly allowed anyone to inject him with testosterone or human growth hormone.
Clemens' interview with Wallace leaves me feeling more and more like The Rocket was, at some points during his career, juiced.
In fact, I think Clemens' performance Sunday night was more suited for an Oval Office exit interview, or even the New Hampshire debates stage of the night before.
Not only did Clemens not really answer any of Wallace's questions, he tried more than once to deflect the attention onto other matters.
He definitely said "(it) never happened" more than half a dozen times, sometimes up to four times in a row, as Wallace re-counted the trainer's account in the report.
But his indirect, and in my mind, insincere, regard for the questions makes me think he's hiding something.
As far as steroids, I don't think the real story will ever get out. Obviously.
But why further push the uncertainty at this point?
I think it would have been best for Clemens to not do the interview, and wait this out some more.
At least, that is, if he's not going to confess anything.
