Right decision
Jordan Lyles made the right move. The former Hartsville standout bypassed a chance to play for Ray Tanner and South Carolina last year after he was taken by the Houston Astros with the 38th pick in the Major League Baseball draft.
Financially, it was a smart move. He got a $900,000 signing bonus and is able to give himself a nice cushion.
The biggest thing he is getting the instruction and attention Lyles needs by being with a professional club. He got to play a half season of minor league baseball last summer and followed that by attending an instructional league which he called a “good experience.”
Lyles has spent the last month in Florida getting ready for the upcoming season which will begin for him in April with the Class A Lexington Legends.
That definitely sounds a lot better than going to class, doing a term paper or study for a final.
Don’t get me wrong, the college atmosphere is great and you can’t underestimate the value of an eduction.
But in this case, the best learning is by being on the field where Lyles is now.
