Rare plays make baseball great

So, while tuning into the Pirates game on Sunday, something happened that I didn't expect.

A triple play.

I was only 11 years old the last time the Buccos turned the trifecta, and didn't have DirecTV or ESPN or any other way to see the highlights. Now, I get to watch it over and over again.

It's one of the things that makes baseball so great. No matter what game you're watching, you always have the possibility of seeing something great happen.

A triple play is rare. Someone hitting for the cycle is even rarer and a no-hitter is even harder to come by.

And of course, the perfect game is the rarest gem of all, with only 17 occurrences all-time.

But that's part of what makes you tune in. Aside from cheering for your team, you never know when a pitcher might have that special mix to toss a no-no or perfecto.

Likewise, you never know when someone like Albert Pujols will drive in seven runs in a game. Or hit four homers in one game (He's come close against the Pirates.)

Most great in-game moments happen with the pitchers or the batters. I think that's what makes the triple play so unique. Other than a spectacular catch, it's probably the only defensive play that can really excite a crowd.
