Planning a trip to the mountains to check out the fall colors? Read this before you go.
The latest forecast from Dr. Howie Nuefield, professor of plant physiology at Appalachian State University, is out and according to http://www.visitNC.com, he says it will be an "excellent" year compared to average. As of Wednesday, Nuefield says Grandfather Mountain, NC is in full color and there is "widespread" color in the mountains at or above 5,000 (pretty high for the southern Appalachians). So, if you already have a trip planned for this weekend October 11-12, don't cancel it, but you will have to go to the highest elevations to find much color.
According to Nuefield, peak color will be in another 7 to 10 days, meaning the ideal weekends for a trip to the NC mountains will be the weekends of October 18-19 and October 25-26. Be sure to "Snap" some pictures to our website when you get back and I'll feature some of them on News 13 each morning around 6:08.
