Parity or lack of stars

I am not a big fan of everyone justifying this seasons’ bombardment of mediocrity in college football due to parity. I like cheering for the underdog, when it’s Appalachian State, or to see the hard earned success of Jim Leavitt at South Florida. But when it comes to an assortment of teams lacking star power and generally having an off year due to the recruiting cycle, I think it’s boring. Now who can argue against the Michigan debacle at the “Big House,” (sorry Big Blue fan) it’s great for sports to give the David’s of the athletic world a chance. Yet, give me a perfect Southern California team in week ten of the season to root against.
Just like baseball you have to have the Yankees and Red Sox to cheer against to drive passion and the sport it self. As I sit here watching the final outs being put away in the World Series, and Boston on the cusp of another championship. I wonder how many bandwagon Beantown jumpers I will run into in the coming weeks.
If most bandwagon fans are happy with their newly coveted teams that walk the walk for a mere ten months, then why does everyone on the surface love having weekly changes to the number one ranking?
Ohio State is ranked at the top for the second straight week, but come on, do they deserve it? NO! So they beat Penn State, but let them try hoeing a perfect row in the SEC We all know that’s not happening. They went to the National Championship game last year, and lost a ton of talent. Boston College is number two, yes Matt Ryan is good, but that’s a tough pill to swallow. Give me week nine of the football season with five or six perfect teams to cheer against. I like options, I like seeing programs on the rise, but with the lack of star power types (i.e. Vince Young, Rocket Ismail, Reggie Bush, Vinny Testeverde, Ricky Williams, Charlie Ward, Danny Wuerfell, Desmond Howard, you get the point) it’s not nearly as fun as in the years past.
You can check out the Heisman race, an underclassman was the leading candidate, where are the ballers at? I am a Tim Tebow fan but the lack of star power and lack of dominating teams has made for mediocrity.
Tell me what you think of this season!
I was going to write this week about South Carolina’s game at Tennessee, but I’m going to wait for Steve Spurrier’s midweek press conference for that. Blake Mitchell shocked me with his performance, and I don’t believe you can rip USC for their second half effort, it was solid! Their first half effort you can definitely stomp on, but the Gamecocks are one of those teams on the rise, and I root for those types, but I won’t be driving the bandwagon bus.
