November Already?
As I drove back to work from dinner on Thursday night, the realization that in fact the calendar has turned to November hit me pretty hard. There's no particular reason. I am not worried. It's just hard to believe that 2007 has come this far, this fast.
A lot has happened for me this year.
I married the love of my life in March.
In June, we got a cat.
In July, we moved to Myrtle Beach.
In TV news, November means one thing, and one thing only: sweeps.
To you, the viewer, this means only you'll see more intense promotion of more in-depth reporting, which is really a great way for us to showcase resources, technology, and expertise that is top-notch.
Case-in-point: Martha Hunn's incredible look at the wretched conditions of some South Carolina bridges and roadways. Martha has been working on this story very hard for a very long time.
Her hard work paid off!
Expect more of the same between now and the end of the month. We do this so the ratings period will hopefully reflect more viewers.
But it's also November, as in, the month before the last month of the year, as in, less than two months until Christmas.
And, against all belief, against all relative good sense, and just because I felt like it, I popped in a Chrismas music CD (to be precise: Trans-Siberian Orchestra) into my car stereo, and found myself enjoying what I heard.
Have I lost my mind?
I remember some radio stations in Washington, D.C., near where I grew up, began playing NOTHING BUT Christmas tunes on Halloween.
I found this to be a little extreme, but here I am, on November 1st, blaring "O, Holy Night" in my car.
Don't tell anyone.
