Notorious
There's been a hefty cinematic event in the news and it's not Clint Eastwood's geriatric Dirty Harry revival "Gran Turino".It's the biopic of the late-Brooklyn rapper Christopher "Biggie" Wallace.
It's executive produced by former Biggie sidekick Sean "Puffy" Combs and directed by George Tillman of "Soul Food" fame. It stars Jamal Woolard as Notorious B.I.G. Since the trailer, hype has been huge and hasn't waned a considerable sense in the two weeks of the film's release.
There are interviews on network television, blogs are abuzz and NPR has already dedicated two programs to the film: the last one being a discussion of a comparison between Wallace and President Barack Obama.
I've not seen the movie, blogreader. I will eventually, but I've been perusing the criticism and it hasn't been too nice.
What they're saying is Tillman's movie looks like a cop-out. It's fast-paced and underdeveloped, critics say. Parts of Biggie's life that could be investigated and, perhaps, be quite interesting are glazed over, they say. There is no strong desire to penetrate the motives behind many of Biggie's actions goes a few blogs. A Pee Dee resident who saw the movie told me that, at times, it seemed like Puffy was subtlely aggrandizing himself.
It has some really nice moments, critics say. A writer from filmcritic.com mentions the scene where Puffy is constructing the beat that would eventually become the Biggie song "Juicy" as a beautiful scene. David Denby of The New Yorker commented, "...when Woolard sings, changing his flow to match Biggie’s, he’s both powerful and persuasive." And, no doubt, Woolard nails Biggie's swagger and sound.
Yet, that seems to be where critics draw the line. They want more. More information, less ambiguity. That seems to be the overall consensus.
Blogreader, I'll see the movie eventaully and then I'll make my own judgment. Yet, to paraphrase another critic: making a movie about the life of Christopher Wallace and all the dynamics of his presence on the 90s East Coast rap scene, his embroilment in the East Coast-West Coast feud and his influence upon African Americans of his generation as well hip-hop in general may need a mini-series, not a two-hour movie, to express everything that needs to be said.

I translated this to Chinese using Babel Fish. I was hoping I might could understand it a little better. It worked.
