Not a fitting end for Tate
Bill Tate's tenure at Timmonsville came to an abrupt end this week, and it didn't turn out quite the way anyone would have expected. The long-time coach guided the Whirlwinds to two state titles and six more appearances. He meant so much to the program that they even named their football field after him.
Needless to say, it was not a fitting end.
Whatever the reason, be they monetary or a sense that Pate is near retirement and doesn't have the drive he once did, Tate is one of the few coaches who should go out on his own terms. He's won more ball games in his time at Timmonsville that pretty much anybody else, and like Jewell McLaurin in Lake View, he did it without too much change.
A Hall-of-Famer and a great coach, he had a rough year this past season, but had the Whirlwinds in the lower state semifinals a year ago. And in Class A with Tate at the helm, Timmonsville was always dangerous.
Who better can you get to replace him?

Bill Tate is a classy man. I coached with him back in the late 70s. Timmonsville was a fun place to coach...basketball and track.
I can’t believe that they would just let him go. He has paid his dues. Give him his job back.
