NFL draft different for Steelers fans
The NFL draft has become the symbol of hope for a lot of teams out there, namely the Detroit Lions.Every year, die-hard fans gather to see if their favorite teams can gather enough talent to take that next step.
It's a little different for Steelers fans, though.
Basically since the 1970s, the draft has become a way to build depth on the team, but the six-time Super Bowl champions very rarely make a big splash.
Of course, they're very rarely picking in the top 10.
With as much success as they've had, the biggest splash they've made in recent years was picking Ben Ro-ethlisberger No. 11 in the 2004 draft.
That one turned out well, obviously, but for the most part, the Steelers don't need to have the ultra-hyped player to be successful. They've done extremely well in the late first round and beyond.
For example, Santonio Holmes, Heath Miller, Troy Polamalu and Casey Hampton were all chosen later than 15th in their respective drafts and all were key members of the Super Bowl XLIII championship team.
So while big-name players can help, it's more about getting the right players and making the right decisions in the draft.
And with six titles since 1974, it's hard to argue with how the Steelers do it.
