New baseball, softball seasons are upon is
The 2009 baseball, softball seasons officially started Monday, giving rise to the question of who will this year's champions be?The baseball side is tricky. All of last year's major contenders (Dillon, Lake City, Hartsville, Lamar, East Clarendon) lost major pieces, except Johnsonville. The Flashes return everyone, and if Bamberg isn't quite what they were last year, Johnsonville looks to have a pretty good shot at the lower state title at least. Everyone else remains to be seen.
On the softball side, South Florence and Darlington are missing big pitchers from last season, but both programs have always done well at replacing talent. But for the most part, softball discussions begin and end in Class A. Lake View, Latta, Johnsonville and East Clarendon seem to slug it out every season for the right to go to state.
As much as I'm impressed with what coach Huggins has done at Lake View, I'd have to give the edge this year to East Clarendon. The Wolverines, my alma mater, bring back everyone on a team that's been a contender for nearly four years now. If they can get consitent hitting, they'll be tough to beat.
