“Nerd Alert!“
Yeah, I was in marching band. For eight years.
So what?
It was truly the most fun I've ever had, and not only did I meet my wife in the band at Maryland, but I also got to perform for two different U.S. presidents, performed for millions of chilly New Yorkers in the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2000, and for thousands of fans at ACC basketball and football games.
So I am very proud and very excited that FOX showed big chunks of each BCS game halftime shows, and in most cases, they showed both schools' bands.
Very cool.
When Maryland made it to the Orange Bowl in 2002, we got to perform our pre-game show, and then we combined with Florida's band and about a dozen high school bands to form the "background" for recording artists including (Lil) Bow Wow and Frankie Negron (who?).
Let's just say that performance was less than memorable.
But Ohio State and LSU's bands looked and sounded great on Monday night on the big High Definition TV in the News13 newsroom.
I was pretty excited to see it, and our 11 p.m. producer, Molly, called me a "nerd" for it.
I know how much fun I had, and how much pride it brought me.
Nothing nerdy about that.
