Myrtle Beach Marathon Weather Outlook

If you've been reading my blog this week, you already know that showers and possibly breezy conditions have been in the forecast for this weekend's marathon.

Unfortunately, that forecast looks a little wetter than previously thought. Current computer models now indicate about a 70% chance of rain beginning Friday night and lasting through much of Saturday. Until this morning, models had been pointing toward 1/10 to 1/4 inch of rain and only had rain chances around 40%. It now looks like rain is likely with rain totals between Friday night and Saturday in the 1/2 to 1 inch range. My advice: stay way from cotton clothing unless you want to gain about 20 pounds during the race.

Perhaps of more concern to avid runners, I've been thinking it may be a little bit breezy on raceday. Fortunately, computer models have backed off of projected wind speeds a little bit. It now appears winds will be mainly from the south or southwest at 10 to 15 mph. That will still make for a pretty decent head wind on certain parts of the course, but is not as bad as it was looking a couple of days ago.

And finally, there is some good news to report. It still looks like temperatures will be in the upper 40s when the gun sounds at 6:30 Saturday morning. With overcast sky conditions a near certainty and high temperatures Saturday cooling into the 50s, conditions should be just right for running--if we could only do something about this rain and wind.

I'll keep working on it.
