Morning Buzz: Writing skills pay the bills for a new home


Today’s buzz comes to us from KVAL in Eugene, Oregon. A couple in Oregon found a creative way to sell their beach home in this sluggish real estate market. Ray and Sharon Sinclair told TV station KVAL that they were tired of having their $600,000 beach house sitting on the market. So, they decided to give the house away to the winner of an essay contest. Applicants have to pay an entry fee of $200 and write “Why we want to win this house” in 100 words or less.

The couple is capping the contest at 3,000 entries… which means they’ll have received the original selling price of $600,000.

So far, they say they’ve received entries from across the country… and even from other countries. They will actually not judge the essays, themselves. They placed an ad in an Oregon newspaper to find the three judges.

The contest runs through the end of the month, and so far, the Sinclairs have received 2,200 entries.

I’ll show you video of the house this morning. I think this is a pretty smart idea… and some lucky person will win a $600,000 beach house for $200!

They are already at $440K with 2200 sold tickets.
Not bad with no sales commission to pay. If it was a little closer I might consider entering the contest. Then again what does that have to do with it if you turn around and sell it? Huuummm.

Hello my name is Maegan Peters and i’m writing for my mom, Kristin Nave. i am 15 years old, i have a sister that is 18 and a brother that is 11. our mom has raised us on her own since she was 16 years old, with no family and with little help from our dads. she is a survivor of an abusive marriage, a mother that died of aids when my mom was 22,and a battle of depression. my mom is the strongest and most loving person we know. our mother never gives up and she has the biggest heart ever. she is always there not only for us, but others in need as well. we have seen so much good from her and also seen the bad thats happened to her and us. we would love to win this home for her because not only is she the greatest, but because we would like to see our mom have something good come back to her in return of all the goodness she has given. plus we would like to see her stop working two to three jobs and stop paying high bills for something we have to end up moving out of.and most important that she can have more time and fun with us. thanking you kindly, Maegan Peters from Garden City Beach, SC.

I wood like to inter your contest to.  My name is Gimbya Ifrah Godbolt.  My Momma is on crack. I don’t know who my Daddy be.  Momma don’t work and all the money we get is from my 5 brother and 4 sisters monthly welfare check. It just ain’t enough anymore cause gas is so high and so is Momma.  It is all we can do to put gas in the Catalack.  We could sho use that house. If i win will you just send me some money instead?
