Morning Buzz: Why drive a car when you can ride a horse…

Some high school students in Northern Kentucky decided to ditch their cars in favor of riding their horses to school last week. This story comes to us from WCPO in Kentucky. The three students at Conner High School in Hebron are members of the Future Farmers of America. They say they came up with the idea to save money on gas. And, the school is supporting their efforts. The horses were fed food and water in front of the agricultural building.

Do you think we may see more people finding new ways to school and work because of high gas prices?

I saw a story on this on Inside Edition..I believe it was..kids riding horses to school 3 days a week...to save on gas..

You would just about have to have a horse or ride one often..to appreciate this story..

For someone to get up early enough to get yourself ready..then have the time to get your horse geared up..and you and this animal head out down highways that are no longer safe to walk on..is a task not many would consider....sane..

Traffic flow has increased to the point over the years that it just is barely safe enough to drive another vehicle..so any means used that is less in weight or speed is risky…

If you havent ridden a horse for some time..go ride one for about an hour..the next morning you will discover sore muscles that you didnt even know you had..and quickly curve your appetite for riding your horse to school or work..

I think overall the population has become lazy..and the novelty of any new way of travel would wear off real fast..

Well they rode them in the 1800’s if they were good enough for Folk’s back then..They ought to be good enough for us this day and time… just i would want a fast Mustang to ride!...Lyra how Much Horsepower does one of those Horses have? wink

I’m no expert on horses, but I think the hoursepower for each horse would be… one.  lol! wink

Actually...*LOL*..

The peak power over a few seconds has been measured to be as high as 14.9 hp… however..for longer periods an average horse produces less than one horsepower…

The term horsepower came to life when it was determined that a horse working in a mine could lift(using a pulley)...33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute…

So there really is no simple answer to the question..wink

I’m scared of horses. If one can cripple Superman, one can certainly hurt Mr. Mookie.
Wonder if I could ride a Shetland pony? or maybe a donkey? My ride to work is only 3 miles. I don’t spend that much on gas. However, the wife drives 46 miles round trip. I might consider getting her one.

i have a horse or “pony” under 14 hands who walks real fast and we trail ride on 18-20 mile trips which take 6 hrs but u take a lunch break.  ive ridden on the hwy 9 miles in about 3 hrs w/ lots of distractions. meaning we stop lots of times, so if i didnt live so far from my work every day id entertain the idea of riding instead of driving.
