Morning Buzz: Waterproof electronics?

Today’s story comes to us from CNET. It’s about a new product that promises to make your electronics totally waterproof. We’re talking about laptops, cell phones, etc. A CNET reporter put the product to the test. I’ll show you the video this morning where an I-phone is thrown into a sink full of water and comes out just fine! It was coated with a clear spray-on product that claims to render it 100% waterproof. This product goes on sale in a few months. But, if you want it, start saving now! It’ll cost around $1,000. Do you think it’s worth it to protect your gadgets?

I am skeptical that all cracks and openings can be sealed so water can’t enter a laptop computer with something you spray on. Even if the product can do that, how about the USB, microphone and earphone and other connections? The spray would insulate the contacts. Worth it? Not $1000. $100 perhaps if it make something truly water tight.

I too, think the $1000 price tag is steep.  I wonder what it’s made of that makes it so expensive.

If this is the stuff I am thinking of…it isnt a spray at all..it is more like a film of clear coating..

It’s called Golden Shellback…

That’s the stuff, Wolf.  Don’t see where the average consumer would fork out that kind of money. However, might be a good investment for boat manufacturers or boat dealers. I use a product called T-shield on my marine electronics. Works well and much cheaper.

I agree..if I drop my cell phone in the water…after my wife beats me up..

I’ll just ask her to buy me another phone..smile

They say they are going to get the costs down eventually to 50 to 75 bucks…so I think I’ll just hold out for a while..and avoid hanging over the side of the boat while talking on my cell phone..
