Morning Buzz: Jail for Sale

If you’re in the market for an out-of-the ordinary brick building that’s unlike anything your friends own, you may want to check out http://www.mainehomesandcondos.com. There, you’ll find a listing for the old Somerset County Jail in downtown Skowhegan. It says the building is 2 floors plus a basement, 1400+ Sq. feet and located in the heart of Downtown Skowhegan. And, there are no zoning restrictions. The price: $200,000.
Central Maine’s Morning Sentinel reports the Somerset County Commissioner says the aim is to get the property back on the tax rolls. He said some ideas are: turning the old jail into a restaurant, art gallery, or even a bus station.

What do you think about the old county jail being up for sale? Also, I know we have some viewers who are originally from Maine. If you’re reading this help me out by writing down a pronunciation key on how to pronounce Skowhegan. Thanks!

I do believe they pronounce it.."Skooo-he-gan"..cept they say it fast..without a southern drawl..northern people tend to do that alot..

Things up there must be getting pretty bad if they are having to sell their jail..

Those poor criminals will be home-less..wink

For the record..it was North Carolina that Chris ate at the jail..I was in the cell..ummm..I mean..I was sitting at the table just behind him..wink

Let Media General find out it is for sale and they will buy that bad boy..slap a scnow bumper sticker on the front door..hire up a ton of pretty people..new vehicles and equipment..and build a nice break-room..

..then start cutting costs and laying people off..down sizing..

..it’s a win-win situation..wink*LOL*

I am originally from Maine. The name is pronounced SKOW-HEE-GAN.  You pronounce the first sylable like cow with an s ib front.  I went to that Jail the last ime I was in Maine to take pictures.

The idea of it being turned into a bed and breakfast is quite good since there is a shortage of those in that area and that area has some very remarkable history to it. A very affordable out of the way place to visit for vacation.
