Morning Buzz: How will you spend the $600?

If you’re one of the millions of Americans getting an economic stimulus check, we want to know how you plan to spend the money (on average $600 per person). The government is mailing the checks to jump-start the economy, but will you spend the money, pay off debt or save it?

We talked about this in a blog a couple of months ago, but now, a lot has changed as the economy continues to struggle. I think many of us will spend the money on food and gas – two things that it seems like we’re paying more and more for each day. Although, I think the goal of sending us the money is for us to splurge on something, but with rising costs, that may not be an option.

What do you plan to do?

I would like to spend it on upgrades, remodeling and repairs for my house, but most of it will probably go to keeping GAS in my three vehicles so my wife, my two teenage daughters, and myself can continue to go to work each day!

Good morning, Lyra & Chris!  When first introduced, I thought for sure I would use it for a vacation or a new TV; however, that has changed!  It will now be used exclusively to pay the mortgage on time, which I have had to pay late fees on for the past several months because of higher food and gasoline costs that need to be covered, too.  I’m not complaining, it’s just what I have to do right now to get by and I know I have plenty of company.  Have a great day.

I still stand strong in my notion to kick start the economy through the “beer and tater chip” industry…

Now in reality this prolly wont help the state of South Carolina..much less the entire United States..but by God it is gonna help me cope with the way things have gotten..

So you can look forward to future posts of mine to contain slurred words and tater chip crumbs..wink

I still wish more of ya’ll could be just like me..the world wouldnt be a better place but we’d be laughin’ too loud to notice..smile

The Associated Press reports some retailers are offering specials and discounts, like giving you an additional 10 percent for using the check to buy a gift card to a certain store.  Does anyone plan to do that?

Come to terms with it already Lyra..

This country is gonna fold like a cheap card-board box...it is just a matter of time..

Even the upper 10% of society aint gonna run out and buy a $600-$1200 gift card to get a 10% discount...not even if it was Victoria’s Secrets that was offering this..

Most all of America will use this money to survive a few more weeks at best...some will foolishly spend it and come to regret it at a later date..

Tougher times are just ahead..and an average $600 bucks aint gonna change that…

“The Associated Press reports some retailers are offering specials and discounts, like giving you an additional 10 percent for using the check to buy a gift card to a certain store.  Does anyone plan to do that?”

Hmmm.  I just bet they are!  Look at the trail on Gift Cards during the Holiday Season.  Most Gift cards have an expiry date - and if not used the store gets the money.  The past has already proven that a large majority of gift cards are not even used by the recipient.  In addition, you get a $50 gift card, and if you do spend it, you spend $48 or so, meaning the store gets to keep the rest - unlikely you will go back and spend your $2 left on the card.  Most people that receive gift cards spend less than the card.  So, You pay $50 for the card, the store gives you an extra $5 on the card, the person you give the card to either doesn’t spend it all, or doesn’t spend it at all and the store gets to profit!  Wouldn’t it just be easier to offer any shopper a 10% discount whether they buy a gift card or not?  In my humble opinion, this is a clever way to part people from their money.

Well Ironically enough the Rebate Checks come just about the time Americans will go on vacation..I Guess The Bush Adminstration Hope that Americans will spend the Rebates on Gas for Travel....Which in turn will go in Mr Bushes pockets Via oil Revenue!.....Well the Truth Hurts! SORRY!! Wolf is right we are headed for Hard Times!!

I am going to get shafted by the government by only getting $300.00 instead of $600.00, what happened to my other $300.00 dollars? I need more money for all my bills.

They sent it to me.  I spent every penny of it on beer and a two bit hooker. Sorry. It was a “stimulus” package.
