Morning Buzz: Getting to work faster: bike vs. car?
Okay, I know I complain about high gas prices a lot, but who doesn’t these days? So this story from CBS affiliate WCCO in Minneapolis caught my attention. The mayor of Minneapolis, R.T. Rybak, came up with something he calls the “Commuter Challenge.”
Last week during the morning rush hour, Rybak hopped on his bike and pedaled to work. And, he also raced against two competitors… someone driving a car, and someone riding a city bus.
The “Commuter Challenge” started in St. Paul and ended in Downtown Minneapolis.
The mayor hopped on his bicycle and pedaled to work during the morning rush hour. He raced against two competitors--one who drove to work and another who used public transportation.
The race started in St. Paul and ended in downtown Minneapolis. The winner… (drum roll please) Mayor Ryback. Then, surprisingly, the bus rider… and in last place, the car driver. Maybe there are other incentives to going “green” after all.

In all fairness..this wasnt exactly a race from point A to point B..
The driver of the automobile was required to put a gallon of gas in my car...buy a newspaper at the Lake Street light-rail station and pick up some tickets at the Bedlam Theatre box office in the Cedar-Riverside area…
The Mayor finished in 31 minutes...the lady who used public transportation finished in 35 minutes..while the car driver finished in 36 minutes..
Now the question that lingers in my mind..
Is winning by 5 minutes worth sitting at work smelling all sweaty with leg cramps and sore muscles? (see Chris to get your local humidity level and heat index)
I think recent headlines help to explain the Mayor’s real intentions..
“Mayor Rybak Opens New Midtown Bike Center”
The center will allow biking commuters to lock up at an indoor bicycle parking bay and go inside for a variety of services: bike repairs..storage..rental..valet..store and cafe…
Bikers are so predictable..
