Morning Buzz for Wednesday 3/19/08 - The vitamin debate

A Harvard doctor claims multivitamins don’t work and may actually be harmful. The opinion of Dr. Harvey Simon is causing quite a controversy. CBS News interviewed Dr. Simon who said, “For healthy adults I can say with a good deal of confidence they’re not effective.” He says they don’t protect against heart disease or cancer, and studies suggest high amounts of some vitamins may actually raise the risk of certain cancers.
But, many experts disagree with Dr. Simon’s findings, including Dr. Richard Riviln of Cornell University’s medical school. Dr. Rivlin says, ‘The balance of evidence really does favor the use of multivitamin supplements.” Some things experts agree on are that vitamins are vital for pregnant woman and anyone with a vitamin deficiency, including senior citizens.
What do you think?

I don’t take vitamins. I do try to eat right…most of the time. I don’t see the benefit of vitamins providing you eat a healthy diet. Something else to spend your money on. I noticed yesterday that the local conveinence store here in Marion sells white clay…..to eat.  Whuz up with that? Anyone know why you would eat clay? I’ve tasted a few mud pies in my day but never clay. I bet Jackie could ask some of them redneck friends of hers. They would know.

Wish this place had a spell check.  The older and better looking I get the worse my spelling has got.

The only issue I have with vitamins is that they are quite hard to swallow. The Multi Vitamins are quite huge.  Though I do think in todays fast food market and processed food process. People do need to take vitamins. Before the fast food rise people grew their own food.  Most people do not in my opinion eat enough vegetables and fruit or eat enough of a variety.

I think eating a well balanced diet is probably best… but, I’m on the move a lot, and I don’t always eat as well as I probably should wink

If any of my redneck friends ever ate clay, Mr. Mookie, it probably wasn’t on purpose!

Can’t say I didn’t take a few headers myself into some of that red clay in the North Carolina foothills growing up while riding my bike or playing outside with my friends. I didn’t find it very tasty, and it always ruined my clothes, too.

As for vitamins, I do take them because some of the prescriptions I take can block/slow the absorption of certain vitamins. But the fewer pills to take, the better. And I’ve watched enough Discovery Health to know that it is possible to OD on too many vitamins.

I was serious about the clay.

They sell it over here and people actually eat it. Want me to send you some to sample? Probably be good with one of the 40oz Blue Ribbons that you’re known to drink.

I think you’ve got some bad sources, Mr. Mookie—I drink Samuel Adams and Rolling Rock. I leave the PBR to my redneck friends. smile
