Morning Buzz for Wednesday 1/16/08—The price is right?

Welcome to the Morning Buzz on scnow.com! This is a place where we can talk about the stories making noise around the Pee Dee, The Grand Strand and beyond. I would love for you to voice your opinion by posting comments here!

Do high prices make us think something is better when it really isn’t? A study at the California Institute of Technology says yes… at least when it comes to wine. Researchers told people they were going to taste 5 different Cabernet Sauvignons while hooked up to brain scanners. But, in reality they were only tasting 3 different wines. A $90 wine was served with its real price tag, and again with a $10 price tag. Another was presented with its real price of $5 and then with a $45 tag. Researchers say the testers’ brains showed more pleasure when participants drank the bottles with the higher price tags – even when it was the same wine. The study concludes people’s perceptions of how good something “should be” can actually outweigh reality.

I wonder if the results would be the same for other things, like ice cream… or even clothing. Do our brains usually interpret something with a higher price as being better? If so, is there anything we can do to “re-program’ ourselves… and save money! What do you think? Let’s discuss this morning. I’ll see you at 5am!

Well first let me set the record straight here..I dont think it is very nice to be playing tricks on winos..it’s tough enough being down there on skid row without people pokin’ fun at them..

They didnt have to conduct a test to figure this one out..

“people’s perceptions of how good something “should be” can actually outweigh reality”..

Any married man could have told them that..even if they had been giving him beer that only cost a dollar and a nickel..

Not that I think any of you need fixin’ but..

..they do have a new “re-programming” wing at the Betty Ford Clinic..it’s just off of the Nintendo wing..

..I find that the chances of meeting your favorite stars greatly improves when you check yourself into detox..surely ya’ll didnt think I met all of these TV personalities at WalMart..wink

All I know is that if high price and quality go hand and hand, my car should be driving itself these days!  Oh wait, that was a different blog. grin

You get what you pay for…..most of the time, but not always.

I wonder if Lyra will look at this like we just gave her an easy out..

She can walk on across the parking lot..get herself a double cheeseburger and a handful of fries and kick back for the rest of the day..not even having to check this blog..

..prolly not huh?

Dave I must say that you seem pretty set in your answer….well kinda..

Can you even imagine what it is like to get up at 5 in the morning..after one of the dogs step on your face..wife is happily snoring..so you wander into the livingroom..turn on your TV and there is the lovely Ms. Lyra..telling you to hurry up cause she wants you to go online..read today’s story and comment on it..

Now you havent even been introduced to anything that even smells like coffee yet..but being a faithful viewer and all..you head off to the computer..drag up scnow..read today’s story about this mind-blowing wino test that the California Institute of Technology conducted…then you have to pull your thoughts together and post something like this..

“Our brains evolved with “high-level” cortical areas taking input from “lower level” perceptual and motor areas…As a consequence, spatial and motor concepts are the natural basis for abstract reasoning..It turns out that price differenciating refers to a physiological mechanism..and the abilities of our brain to employ perceptual and motor inferential processes..creating sub-levels when introduced to alcohol..“

At this point..you aint even awake enough to realise the hit you are about to take in your popularity among WalMart women..but all that seems important to you..right now is to get this posted and get your coffee and get back to the couch..in front of the TV..hopefully in time to see if your “Color the Weather” picture will be show-cased this time…

I sent it in a long time ago under an alias..even lied about my age..but it never even got a mention..my wife says that if I had of sobered up some and stayed in the lines..they mighta showed it..

Ms. Lyra..I’m sorry that me and Chris messed up your topic today..I really wanna included Dave Hicklin in here..but with his comment..I cant figure out if he would be willing to take the fall with us or not…

I just hope that now you realise how difficult it can be for us..being big fans of yours and all..and sometimes you tend to put a few demands on us..just a tad bit too early..and we tend to wander off the beaten track..probably for rebellious reasons..

..but who knows..

No worries… I’m glad to get your comments!  And, just so you know, I usually go for chicken nuggets rather than cheese burgers smile

Posted by  on  01/16  at  12:23 PM

To be honest here..I already knew that..I saw you..sitting at your desk.. throwing down a 12 pack of nuggets..and what looked like one of those Big Gulp drinks..right there before Christmas..

I was just trying to protect your identity..I didnt want someone in line to over hear you ordering and recognize you..

“Psst..That’s Lyra Manning..“

“How do you know that?“

“She ordered the chicken nuggets..“

“Oh my God..It is her..“

“Did you see that? She got two cheese burgers too..let me see your BlackBerry..you have Wolf’s email in here ?“

Wolf there are so many drawings on this shelf here. I drew one myself for the artist of the day, still hasn’t made it on the air and I’m the one picking them out.

Ted..I have S.L.E.D. looking into it now..two F.B.I. profilers are on their way here from Quantico..they seem to think Kimberly Gill stole mine and fled South Carolina..

Mine has a snowman on it..and I didnt stay in the lines cause I had just got my income taxes back..I may have drooled on it too..so they have something to compare my DNA to..

The most important thing she’d learned over the years was that there was no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a good one.

It really doesn’t matter if the person who hurt you deserves to be forgiven. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself. You have things to do and you want to move on.
