Morning Buzz for Tuesday 2/12/08 - Retail therapy

A new study shows there might be some scientific evidence to back-up the idea of retail therapy, according to The Associated Press. The study, which appears in the journal “Psychological Science,” says that people’s spending judgment goes out the window when they’re feeling down. In the study, researchers showed one group of participants a sad clip about a boy’s mentor dying. The other group watched a video about the Great Barrier Reef. The research shows people who watched the sad clip offered to pay nearly 4-times as much for a bottle of water than the group who watched the not-so-sad video.

The study’s outcome was that sad people were willing to spend more freely when their sadness led them to focus more on themselves. Researchers say those people were willing to spend more to feel better about themselves.

Do you tend to spend more when you’re feeling blue? Let’s discuss. Maybe I’ll read your comment live on the air tomorrow!

You only missed it by a mile techie..

That’s depressing..which brings us to today’s topic..

Yes..I’ll prolly go out and spend a small fortune on myself at WalMart now..smile

It makes sense that people who are feeling blue would have the urges to spend more to make themselves feel better…

I dont think the success of this would be long lasting tho..unless you had a deep wallet..

Very true, Wolf!  The spending may feel good at the moment… but if you spend beyond your means, you’re likely in for more stress.

I dont think the wife and I spend any differently..no matter how we are feeling..

Other than our regular bills and the occassional dining out..we do alot more “looking” than actual shopping..

We find it helps to do that and then discuss whether we really want or need something..

I cant even remember the last spur of the moment buying that either of us did..

That’s almost sad enough to make you wanna go buy something..smile

With any luck the explanation for participants paying extra for water, is they were dehydrated from crying throughout the heartrending clip.  If not, it certainly explains why funeral homes can charge such high prices for their products & services!

This reminds me of the story about two women in the checkout line at Dollar General striking up a conversation. One woman had a cart piled high with$1 items. She told the other woman that when she gets depressed she goes shopping. Her response was, you must have been about to have a nervous break down with all that stuff, but at least you didn’t spend much money.

I like that story Dave..

I suppose if you are going to shop while depressed..Dollar General would be the place to go..

We have gone in one of their stores..spent less than 30 bucks and walked out with 6 bags..I wish we could learn how to do that at the grocery store..

I think the whole thing is a conspiracy.  The news only runs stories which sadden you and they do it early enough in the evening so that you can still go out and shop.  wink

I’m struck by the insidious, computer-driven tendency to take things out of the domain of muscular activity and put them into the domain of mental activity. The transfer is not paying off. Sure, muscles are unreliable, but they represent several million years of accumulated finesse.

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

I don’t believe in intuition. When you get sudden flashes of perception, it is just the brain working faster than usual. But you’ve been getting ready to know it for a long time, and when it comes, you feel you’ve known it always.
