Morning Buzz for Tuesday 2/12/08 - Retail therapy
A new study shows there might be some scientific evidence to back-up the idea of retail therapy, according to The Associated Press. The study, which appears in the journal “Psychological Science,” says that people’s spending judgment goes out the window when they’re feeling down. In the study, researchers showed one group of participants a sad clip about a boy’s mentor dying. The other group watched a video about the Great Barrier Reef. The research shows people who watched the sad clip offered to pay nearly 4-times as much for a bottle of water than the group who watched the not-so-sad video. The study’s outcome was that sad people were willing to spend more freely when their sadness led them to focus more on themselves. Researchers say those people were willing to spend more to feel better about themselves.
Do you tend to spend more when you’re feeling blue? Let’s discuss. Maybe I’ll read your comment live on the air tomorrow!
