Morning Buzz for Tuesday 1/29/08 - “Sleepworking”

Check out this article from Associated Press business writer Erin Conroy:

***SLEEPWORKING: Some might consider it their worst nightmare: Completing work-related tasks in their dreams, a phenomenon that’s been dubbed “sleepworking.”

But others are making the most of the hours they are clocking in their sleep. In a recent survey, more than half of the respondents said work becomes a focus of their dreams, and nearly 70 percent of those people said they solve a problem or have a revelation about their jobs while they are sleeping.

“It’s not necessarily a bad thing to dream about our jobs,” said Robert Stickgold, an associate professor or psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. “Your brain is calculating what it needs to be paying attention to, and dreams become effective for problem solving. But if work is all you’re dreaming about then it’s obsessional, which is a problem.”

The Staples National Small Business Survey, conducted through an Internet poll of more than 300 people, also found that 72 percent of respondents make business calls while driving and nearly 40 percent say they get their best ideas behind the wheel.***

I tend to dream about work once in a while, but most of the time I don’t remember the specifics of my dreams. I probably should write them down. But, when I wake up in the middle of the night, I just want to go back to sleep!

What about you? Have you had work dream that helped you solve a real-life problem at work?

This does happen to me alot..

Especially if the job involves alot of blueprints or alot of driving..

It’s like I have already built something 10 times in my sleep the night before I actually build it..

..I welcome this happening..I guess it helps complete the task when you have put all of those hours of trouble-shooting into it the night before..

I dream about other stuff too..but I aint falling for this…the temptation is there..but I’ll pass..I’m just gonna sit here and behave..wink

Oh my. I must be a prostitute.

The editors who sit beside me were talking about this the other day. I think among the three of us, it happens to me the most (go figure).

It doesn’t help me solve any real-life problems at work, though. It just makes me feel like I never left the office!

It’s not like I don’t have any fun at work, but it would be nice if my dreams were more like mini-vacations instead of continuations of the work day—especially after days like yesterday when I got off to a rough start and then it seemed there was more bad news to cover than usual.

I’m still behaving…

but I couldnt help but notice that they conducted a Internet poll of more than 300 people..

How do they do that..just wander into Yahoo Chat and start askin’..?

That’s kinda rude..

That old doctor up there from that Harvard Medical Place..“Stickgold”..that would have to be his Internet name..

He says “But if work is all you’re dreaming about then it’s obsessional, which is a problem.“

..he forgot to give us the cure..do we quit our job or just quit sleeping?

Lyra please dont wake up in the middle of the night and write my name down..I mean ever..

My wife and I buy the occassional second-hand night stand and I dont wanna have to explain how it already has my name on it..

I’ll probably have a dream about blogging soon!

This just happened to me a few nights ago! Twice! I dreamed I was going to Mike Huckabee’s house to write an investigative story about his finances (not even my area, but hey, it’s a dream) and he tried to kill me! Then, a few nights later, my husband woke me up wanting to know what I was giggling about in my sleep. I had dreamed that Jackie had posted something to the budget under the wrong category and for some reason, in dreamland, it may me laugh. Go figure. I think I need a vacation.

ROFLOL, Jamie!

It is all true. I try to let my dreams help me, depending what I get from them.
