Morning Buzz for Thursday 2/7/08 - Did you enjoy the warm weather outside?

A new study says more and more of us are spending less time outside and more time in front of our TVs and computers. A story posted by Miranda Hitti on WebMD.com sites a report from researchers at the University of Chicago. It says, basically, the typical American spends 25% less time in nature than 20 years ago. The researchers came up with the data by tracking visits to national parks, hiking, camping… as well as getting a license to hunt or fish. The study does not count spending time in your backyard.

I like to enjoy the nice weather. But, I have to admit I’m not usually outside exercising or camping. I really enjoy going out to lunch or dinner with friends and enjoying the fresh air. And, even though that probably doesn’t count in this survey… that’s how I like to spend my time outside. What about you?

An even newer study would probably show that in 1988..gas was more affordable..the economy wasnt as shaky..and life moved a bit slower than it does now..

It only makes logical sense that a typical person..spends less time outside after they have aged 20 years..

I also think the study should have included your backyard..outside is outside regardless how far off from your home you get..

I like spending my time outside doing what I like..and exercise is somewhere close to the bottom of that list..along with camping..and hiking..I dont hunt..I rarely fish ..

I have a complex now..after reading Lyra’s blog..I see that I aint a typical American..

Some days it just dont pay to get out of bed..

I agree that hanging out in the backyard should have been included. That is still spending time outside smile

I usually don’t get to go outside much due to work. When I do I love to play tennis when I can find a partner.

Well I just got back in..from out in the backyard..I’ve been playing “bulldozer”..I dont remember it being this much exercise 20 years ago..

I forgot to mention that our backyard consists of hundreds of acres..

I was discussing this with wife over breakfast this morning ..she says since my backyard is bigger than the University of Chicago’s entire campus..it does count..

..she told me some other stuff too..but I cant repeat any of that on here..she dont always talk as pretty as I do..wink

Perhaps the incidence of people spending a reduced amount of time outdoors has a direct relationship to the increase in outdoor pollutants.  After all; some studies have linked these higher pollutant levels with increases in allergies and asthma.  When I was a child growing up we were told to go outside and play in the “fresh air”.  I have to wonder if that analogy still even exists?

You have a good point there PeeDee..I hadnt thought of that..

Tho I truly believe that this study will blame Xbox and the Internet..

...not to mention that TV 13 News..it is addictive..They oughta have to put warning labels on that thing..
