Morning Buzz for Monday 1/28/08 - Learn to Earn?

Several school children in Fulton County, Georgia are involved in a pilot program that pays them to study by the hour. The Associated Press reports the privately funded “Learn & Earn” program will pay 40 hand-picked kids $8 an hour to hit the books. The students will also earn bonuses if they improve their report cards. School officials say the program will determine if cold hard cash can improve students study habits. The kids for this study were picked to participate in the 15 week trail based on attendance, grades and economic need.

What do you think about cash incentives for school kids?

I think when this “test” fails miserably..that these 40 kids will be taking up space in a storage facility in Area 51..

This is a High school and a Middle school conducting this test…it isnt using tax dollars..the money is donated by the Learning Makes A Difference Foundation..

These kids get paid $2.15 better than minimum wage for after school studies to improve study habits..

In reality these kids are doing poor in school..and for 15 weeks are earning hard cold cash..

At the end of 15 weeks..they can go back to doing poor in school because the money aint there anymore..and be mentally crippled just upon entering into adulthood..

Therefore rendering them unable to adapt and survive in a real world scenerio..where normal people do well and are rewarded for it..instead of being rewarded for doing poorly..

At some point..hopefully before they start breeding with the general population..it will come to light that these “creatures” are a menace to society and they will be removed and taken to Area 51 where they can be further studied..much like the kids that were full fledge members of the Mickey Mouse Club..

Back to your question..How do I feel about it?

I really havent given it much thought..as it is happening in another state and I dont have a child in school anymore..

Whatever happened to teaching kids that education itself is something to obtain…and is far more valuable than money? If you tie money to studies, doesn’t that give the impression that the education alone is worthless? I don’t have a problem with some sort of reward or encouragement for excellent grades or marked improvement, but I don’t think it should be the presented as the motive. I was rewarded from time to time (not always) but a good grade and a feeling of accomplishment was the best. It would be a shame for any child to miss out on that.

I can only take a guess at what happened..

The efforts to obtain an education.. were replaced with selling dope..video taping fights to put the internet..planning how they will kill their classmates..trying to hook up with their child molesting teachers..as well as trying to figure out which of your sagging boxers goes with what pair of your sagging britches..

With that tight of a schedule..I can easily see where education takes a back seat..

..wasnt like that when we went to school..we got an education..food and shelter..and a whoopin’..

..not necessarily in that order tho..

How about tear some asses up if they don’t study and make an effort to get good grades. That was my parents philosophy. Look how I turned out!

It’s actually amazing when you look back and see how it used to be..then look at how it is now..

I first got a taste of this when I came home on leave and saw my youngest brother looking like his dog died..only to find out that his grades had dropped and he got caught smoking pot in the house..

In the house? Yes..in the house! You mean in the house unlike outside where it’s ok to smoke pot? Yes!

...and to make matters worse..he wasnt allowed to use the phone for a whole week..

It was official..times had changed..beating your kids was no longer an acceptable form of exercise..

Had that been one of us older kids..at his age..we would have been shot and left for dead on a deserted highway in remote Alaska..

I was lucky..our daughter had direction..and finished at the top of her class..it never even took so much as a threat..so to even imagine her getting paid to study is way on beyond my time..

Maybe a bit farther in the future we will give them money and let them beat us up..when their grades go down..wink
